How to File

File your small claims case at the Yolo County Superior Court, 1000 Main Street, Woodland, CA 95695 — the county's only small-claims location (Civil/Small Claims line: (530) 406-6704). Bring a completed SC-100 (Plaintiff's Claim and ORDER to Go to Small Claims Court) plus the filing fee, or a fee-waiver request (form FW-001) if you cannot afford it. The court's Small Claims Advisor, (530) 207-4233, offers free help preparing your case.

Serving the Defendant

After filing, have the defendant served with your claim at least 15 days before the hearing if they live in the same county, or 20 days before the hearing if they live elsewhere in California (CCP §116.340). Service may be made by the sheriff, a registered process server, or any adult who is not a party to the case; file the proof of service (SC-104) with the court before your hearing date.

Hearing Tips

Interpreters are provided free of charge for Small Claims hearings upon request — submit a request at least 3 court days before the hearing for Spanish, or 5 court days before for other languages, by calling the Interpreter Coordinator at (530) 406-6708.
Under Local Rule 2.4, the court authorizes remote video or phone appearance for civil proceedings and publishes a phone/video dial-in for every courtroom department — but it is the judge's discretion whether your hearing may proceed remotely, so check your hearing notice for any required notice of intent to appear remotely.
Recording, broadcasting, or transmitting any court proceeding is prohibited (Rule of Court 1.150), and remote participants are expected to appear as presentable as if appearing in person.
